“Science is an inspiring process of discovery that helps satisfy the natural curiosity with which we are all born.”
Understanding Science. 2009. University of California Museum of Paleontology. December 16, 2009 http://www.understandingscience.org.
CSI (Corridor STEM Initiative) encourages teachers of science to inspire in students, an appreciation of the natural world. Through science, students develop excitement about and interest in the world around them. Science should be viewed and valued by students as a multi-faceted, flexible process for developing a better understanding of that world.
The goals for school science that underlie the National Science Education Standards are to educate students who are able to
- experience the richness and excitement of knowing about and understanding the natural world;
- use appropriate scientific processes and principles in making personal decisions;
- engage intelligently in public discourse and debate about matters of scientific and technological concern; and
- increase their economic productivity through the use of the knowledge, understanding, and skills of the scientifically literate person in their careers.
